The Story Of Willow Bend Lake

Willow Bend Lake was created in the 1940’s for its sand and gravel deposits. It was actually three seperate sandpits that were formed into one 65 acre lake in the early 1980’s by Vayden Anderson, owner of Overland Ready Mix Sand and Gravel of Stromsburg. It is located near the intersection of Highways 14 and 66, just two miles south of Central City, Nebraska, on the Hamilton County side of the Platte River.

A relaxing atmosphere greets residents and guests the year round. Boating, water skiing, tubing, wake boarding as well as swimming are popular summer pastimes. The southern part of the connected lakes is a no-wake area reserved for fishing. Currently, about one-fourth of the lots have year-round residents. Lincoln residents with property at Willow Bend represent about 20%, others are from Aurora, Grand Island, York, Central City, Stromsburg, Polk, Chapman, Phillips, Kearney, Roca, Norfolk, Hastings and Seward. Access can only be gained through an electric gate to ensure privacy and security. Guests need to use the phone system directory outside the gate to reach residents for entry.

The Willow Bend Lake Association owns the lake and common grounds and sets the assessments for insurance, road maintanence, etc. Association board members are elected each year during the annual meeting. Norm Johnson, a lake resident currently serves as president.
